I wrote EQOS around a simple idea: every athlete has an operating system underneath their physical performance.

How do you process information?

How do you respond to failure?

What happens after a bad call, strikeout or mistake?

Can you notice your emotional state before it controls your next decision?

Can you reset?

Can you respond instead of react?

The sequence is simple:

EVENT → AWARENESS → REGULATION → DECISION → RESPONSE

The better you become at noticing what is happening, the more opportunity you have to control what happens next.

EPISODE 100

The First Domino & The Cost of Hedging

I recently released Episode 100 of my podcast, and this one gets right to the heart of how I think about hitting and performance.

A swing lasts a fraction of a second.

But before the bat ever moves, a lot has already happened.

The hitter has gathered information. His eyes have found something. His brain has recognized a pattern. His body has organized around timing. His attention is somewhere. His nervous system is in a certain state. And somewhere inside all of that, he has either committed to what he is doing, or he has not.

Then the swing happens.

Because the swing is the part we can see, it is usually the first thing we try to fix.

But the swing is not the first event.

It is the last domino.

Before the swing comes:

PREPARATION.
TIMING.
INFORMATION.
ATTENTION.
RECOGNITION.
DECISION.
COMMITMENT.

Then the swing.

Then the result.

That distinction matters.

A hitter can have a great swing and still take a terrible at-bat. He can be late. Chase. Misread a pitch. Lose the release point. Carry the last at-bat into the next one. Become obsessed with getting a hit. Or get caught halfway between two decisions. None of those automatically mean his mechanics are broken.

That is where the cost of hedging comes in.

You cannot fully commit to two decisions at once.

You cannot hunt a fastball while also trying to protect yourself against every possible pitch.

You cannot compete freely while simultaneously trying not to fail.

You cannot have your attention on the baseball while also thinking about your hands, your batting average, the scout in the stands, what your coach thinks, or what happened in your last at-bat.

Eventually, the body has to make a decision.

And when that decision comes late, the movement often looks mechanical.

The hands rush.

The body tightens.

Timing disappears.

The swing changes.

But sometimes what looks like a mechanical problem is really the final consequence of something that happened earlier in the chain.

Episode 100 is about learning to look upstream.

Instead of immediately asking:

“What is wrong with my swing?”

Ask:

Was I prepared?
Was I on time?
What was I looking for?
Did I see the pitch?
Where was my attention?
Did I make a decision?
Did I fully commit to it?

Because if you find the first domino, you have a much better chance of fixing the actual problem.

This is also why I call attention the sixth tool.

Every physical tool becomes less reliable when your attention is pointed at the wrong thing. The skill is not eliminating every thought. That is impossible. The skill is noticing where your attention went and bringing it back:

NOTICE.
RESET.
NEXT PITCH.

And this applies whether you are 10 years old or playing professionally.

For a young player, it may simply mean learning when to turn attention on:

See the ball.
Be ready.
Swing hard at something you can hit.

As players get older, the game speeds up. Information increases. Pressure increases. Expectations increase. The challenge becomes learning what information actually matters and then stripping everything down enough to compete.

At the professional level, players have access to endless data.

The advantage is no longer simply having information.

The advantage is being able to filter it.

Complicated preparation.

Simple execution.

That is a major part of what I work on through TransferEQ.

Not trying to make athletes perfect.

Helping them become better at noticing what is actually happening.

Helping them regulate.

Helping them simplify.

Helping them make clear decisions.

Helping them commit.

And ultimately helping more of their physical ability transfer into competition.

Because confidence is not something we magically create before a game.

Confidence needs evidence.
Evidence comes from work.

Preparing properly is evidence.

Recognizing the pitch is evidence.

Being on time is evidence.

Making a good decision is evidence.

Handling a difficult moment is evidence.

Resetting after a bad at-bat is evidence.

Stack enough of those moments, and athletes start to trust themselves not because every result went their way, but because they have proof that they can operate.

That is the message of Episode 100:

Find the first domino.
Control your attention.
Make the decision.
Commit.
Then let the swing happen.

The outcome gets the last word.

It just does not get the first.
