Why the Autonomic Nervous System May Be Baseball’s Most Overlooked Performance Tool

Exit velocity.
Velocity.
Bat speed.
Spin rate.
Launch angle.
Pop time.
60-yard time.
Strike percentage.
Hard-hit percentage.
First-step reaction time.
Route efficiency.
We have become incredibly good at measuring the result.
And I think that is a good thing.
I love data.
I love information.
I love anything that helps us understand performance better.
But I believe we still spend far too little time measuring, understanding and developing the system responsible for producing all of those results.
The player.
The actual human being.
More specifically:
The brain.
The nervous system.
Attention.
Emotional state.
Recovery.
Self-talk.
Awareness.
Decision-making.
And the ability to recognize information and actually do something with it.
That is a major reason TransferEQ exists.
It is also why I use the term EQOS.
EQOS: The Emotional Intelligence Operating System
Every athlete has an operating system running underneath performance.
I call it EQOS.
Emotional Intelligence Operating System.
Your operating system is constantly taking in information.
Processing information.
Deciding what matters.
Deciding what does not.
Directing attention.
Creating emotional responses.
Creating physical responses.
Assessing threat.
Assessing opportunity.
Influencing behavior.
Influencing decisions.
And eventually producing performance.
Before a hitter recognizes a slider, something is already happening.
Before a pitcher commits to a pitch, something is happening.
Before an outfielder takes his first step, something is happening.
Before a catcher processes information and calls the next pitch, something is happening.
And before a player responds to an error, a bad call, a coach, a teammate, a parent, a scout or pressure, something is already happening inside that player.
Your nervous system is playing before you are.
Your operating system is already processing information.
That matters.
Your Nervous System Is Playing Before You Are
The autonomic nervous system is one of the systems responsible for regulating many of the processes happening automatically inside your body.
Heart rate.
Breathing.
Arousal.
Stress response.
Digestion.
Recovery.
Alertness.
Energy mobilization.
Your body is constantly adjusting to what your brain perceives around you.
One simplified way of understanding the autonomic nervous system is through two major branches.
The sympathetic nervous system helps prepare the body for action.
Fight or flight.
Energy.
Activation.
Alertness.
Competition.
The parasympathetic nervous system supports recovery, restoration and regulation.
Neither one is bad.
You need activation.
You need intensity.
You need adrenaline.
You need energy.
You also need the ability to come back down.
The problem is not getting activated.
The problem is when you cannot regulate that activation.
And baseball may be one of the greatest tests of regulation in sport.
You can go from standing around doing almost nothing to having to make an incredibly complex decision in a fraction of a second.
Then you wait again.
Then maybe you fail.
And everybody sees it.
Then the game asks you to perform again.
That is baseball.
And if we are going to develop baseball players properly, we have to understand the system underneath all of it.
Baseball Is An Attention Sport
I say this constantly:
Attention is the sixth tool.
You can hit.
You can hit for power.
You can run.
You can throw.
You can defend.
But if your attention is somewhere else when the game asks for those tools, how accessible are they?
That is what makes attention different.
Attention influences your ability to access everything else.
And attention is a major part of your operating system.
Your brain is constantly deciding what deserves your attention.
That decision is happening all day.
Not just when the first pitch is thrown.
Look at the environment athletes are living in now.
Phones.
Notifications.
Social media.
Messages.
School.
Relationships.
Parents.
Recruiting.
Statistics.
Travel.
Video.
Coaches.
Friends.
Gaming.
Rankings.
Comparison.
Expectations.
College decisions.
Scholarship pressure.
Fear of failure.
Who watched my story?
Why did that coach not text back?
What did somebody post?
Who is starting tomorrow?
What did the radar gun say?
What is my batting average?
Who committed where?
Every one of those things asks the athlete’s operating system to process something.
Every notification.
Every conversation.
Every worry.
Every decision.
Every comparison.
And none of it automatically disappears when you walk through the dugout gate.
Your nervous system does not say:
“Baseball game starting. Delete everything else.”
Your emotional intelligence operating system does not shut everything else off because first pitch is at seven.
You bring your life onto the field with you.
That matters.
What Happens Off The Field Eventually Shows Up On The Field
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings I see in player development.
We separate the athlete from the person.
You cannot.
Take a 15-year-old player.
He slept five hours.
Spent six hours on his phone.
Got into an argument with his parents.
Rushed out the door.
Barely ate.
He is worried about making the team.
Maybe something is happening with his girlfriend.
Maybe he is struggling at school.
Then he gets to practice.
And we expect him to immediately become a perfectly focused baseball player.
Then when he does not, we say:
“Focus.”
“Lock in.”
“Compete.”
Okay.
What does that actually mean?
Where is his nervous system?
Where is his attention?
What has his operating system been processing all day?
What happened during the other 23 hours of his day?
College players deal with the same thing.
Classes.
Training.
Travel.
Early mornings.
Late nights.
Relationships.
Depth charts.
Coaches.
Playing time.
Competition.
More freedom.
Greater independence.
And often more distraction than they have ever had before.
Professional players are not immune either.
Now add:
Statistics.
Transactions.
Promotions.
Demotions.
Contracts.
Playing time.
Career uncertainty.
Other players moving ahead of you.
The level changes.
The nervous system does not suddenly become irrelevant.
The operating system does not disappear.
In many ways, the opposite happens.
The higher the level, the smaller the margins become.
Everybody is talented.
Everybody trains.
Everybody has information.
Your ability to consistently access your talent becomes increasingly important.
This Starts Much Earlier Than People Think
TransferEQ is not just for college athletes.
It is not just for elite baseball.
It is not just for professional players.
I believe these skills should begin being developed when kids are young.
Ages 10-12
At this age, I am not trying to turn a child into a sports psychologist.
That would completely miss the point.
I am trying to teach awareness.
What happened?
How did you feel?
Where was your attention?
What happened after you made that error?
Did you rush?
Did you notice yourself getting frustrated?
What does nervous feel like in your body?
Can you recognize it?
That is it.
Because awareness is a skill.
Emotional intelligence is a skill.
And skills can be trained.
EQ is not simply being nice.
It is not just being emotionally mature.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to notice what is happening inside you and around you, understand it, and make a better decision because of it.
That is part of your operating system.
Ages 13-16
Now the environment becomes more complicated.
Phones become much more significant.
Social pressure increases.
Comparison increases.
Teams become more competitive.
Players begin getting ranked.
Parents start thinking about recruiting.
Athletes begin attaching more of their identity to their performance.
This is where attention management becomes incredibly important.
Can you reset?
Can you recognize distraction?
Can you manage your self-talk?
Do you understand routines?
Can you prepare?
Can you recover?
Can you communicate?
Can you separate one bad at-bat from the next one?
Can you recognize when something outside baseball is affecting baseball?
This is EQOS development.
You are helping an athlete understand what their system is doing before asking them to control it.
Ages 17-18
Now decisions become real.
College.
Recruiting.
Scholarships.
Roster spots.
Playing time.
Showcases.
Velocity.
Numbers.
Social media.
Coaches.
Expectations.
Everybody wants the athlete to try harder.
Sometimes trying harder is not the answer.
Sometimes the athlete needs to learn how to manage the operating system that is trying so hard.
College Players
College baseball adds another level of demand.
Strength training.
Classes.
Travel.
Early mornings.
Late nights.
Relationships.
Depth charts.
Competition.
Coaches.
Limited recovery.
More independence.
More responsibility.
More available distraction.
At this level, talent is not enough.
Your ability to repeatedly access your talent matters.
Professional Players
Professional baseball magnifies everything.
Everybody is good.
Everybody trains.
Everybody has video.
Everybody has data.
Everybody has tools.
So what happens when you go 0-for-12?
What happens when you get moved down?
What happens when somebody else gets promoted?
What happens after an error?
What happens after sitting for five days?
What happens when your role changes?
Can you regulate?
Can you remain present?
Can you make a good decision?
Can you keep your attention where it belongs?
That becomes performance.
We do not just need better baseball players.
We need athletes who understand themselves.
We need players who understand their operating system.
This Is Why TransferEQ Exists
TransferEQ was built around a simple problem:
We collect enormous amounts of physical performance data while often ignoring the human operating system responsible for producing it.
That operating system is what I call EQOS.
Emotional Intelligence Operating System.

Because the operating system is already running whether we measure it or not.
Stress is there.
Attention is there.

I am interested in patterns.
What keeps showing up?
What does your operating system repeatedly do under stress?
What repeatedly pulls your attention?
What changes your behavior?
What happens when pressure increases?
And how do those patterns connect to performance?
That is where this gets interesting.
Data Without Context Is Just A Number
This is where performance programs can go wrong.
A number by itself does not always tell us very much.
Let’s say a player has poor recovery.
Okay.
Why?
Sleep?
Stress?
Late-night phone use?
Training load?
Travel?
Nutrition?
A relationship?
School?
Playing-time anxiety?
Something happening at home?
Maybe we know.
Maybe we do not.
That distinction matters.
Inside TransferEQ, something I care deeply about is separating:
FACT.
PATTERN.
INFERENCE.
UNKNOWN.
A fact is something we know.
A pattern is something we repeatedly see.
An inference is something the available information suggests.
And sometimes the correct answer is:
We do not know yet.
That is okay.
That is better than pretending.
The goal of this system is not catching an athlete doing something wrong.
That is not what I am interested in.
The goal is awareness.
Because you cannot consistently manage something you never notice.
Measurement gives us something to discuss.
Patterns give us something to coach.
Awareness gives the athlete something they can actually change.
And over time, that awareness begins to upgrade the operating system.
We Are Not Trying To Eliminate Stress
The goal is not to create completely calm baseball players.
Baseball requires intensity.
Competition requires stress.
Adrenaline can help performance.
The goal is developing an athlete who can operate inside different levels of activation.
Can you recognize when you are speeding up?
Can you recognize when you are flat?
Can you regulate your breathing?
Can you regain your attention?
Can you interrupt negative self-talk?
Can you reset after failure?
Can you recognize what is happening before it controls your next decision?
That is emotional intelligence in action.
That is EQOS operating under pressure.
That is emotional intelligence transferred into performance.
That is TransferEQ.
The Transfer Is The Entire Point
Knowing something is not enough.
Reading a sports psychology book is not enough.
Listening to a motivational speech is not enough.
Writing down goals is not enough.
Doing breathing exercises in your bedroom is not enough.
The question is:
Can you transfer it?
Can your operating system access it when the game actually asks for it?
Can you recognize the change in your body after strike two?
Can you notice your breathing getting shallow?
Can you recognize that you are rushing?
Can you notice that you are still thinking about the previous pitch?
Can you recognize frustration before frustration controls the next play?
Can you identify when your attention leaves the present moment?
And then…
can you do something about it?
That is the skill.
That is where emotional intelligence becomes performance intelligence.
Awareness Creates A Gap
A huge part of mental performance comes down to creating a small gap.
Something happens.
Then you respond.
Most people never recognize the gap.
They simply react.
Error.
Reaction.
Strikeout.
Reaction.
Bad call.
Reaction.
Coach says something.
Reaction.
Parent says something.
Reaction.
Teammate makes a comment.
Reaction.
That is an operating system running automatically.
Stimulus in.
Reaction out.
But when awareness improves, the sequence can change.
Event -> Awareness -> Regulation -> Decision -> Response
Something happens.
I notice it.
I regulate.
I make a decision.
Then I respond.
That is emotional intelligence in action.
Not theory.
Not a textbook.
Not a motivational quote.
Real-time emotional intelligence.
That gap might only last a few seconds.
Sometimes less than one second.
But there can be an enormous amount of performance inside that gap.
I am not trying to create a player who never gets frustrated.
That is unrealistic.
I am not trying to create a player who never gets nervous.
That is unrealistic too.
I want an athlete who notices it sooner.
That is different.
Because if I notice something earlier, I have options.
If I do not notice it until it owns me, now I am reacting.
Awareness gives you another decision.
And every time you do that, you are teaching your operating system another way to respond.
Why We Measure
We measure because human beings are not especially good at accurately remembering everything affecting them.
Athletes will say:
“I am sleeping fine.”
The data may show otherwise.
“I am barely on my phone.”
The screen-time report may show otherwise.
“My routine is pretty consistent.”
The calendar may show otherwise.
None of this is about catching somebody.
It is about awareness.
You cannot consistently manage something you never notice.
Measurement gives us something to discuss.
Patterns give us something to coach.
Awareness gives us something to develop.
TransferEQ is not about reducing people to numbers.
It is about using information to understand the person behind the numbers.
Parents Are Part Of The Operating System Too
Parents matter enormously.
Not because parents need to become another coach.
Often the opposite.
Parents need to understand what the athlete’s nervous system is already processing.
Maybe the car ride home is not the best time to break down three at-bats.
Maybe your kid does not need another mechanical correction.
Maybe they need ten minutes where nobody asks them anything about baseball.
Tone matters.
Questions matter.
Expectations matter.
Body language matters.
Sleep routines matter.
Phones in bedrooms matter.
Family schedules matter.
The emotional environment around the athlete matters.
All of those things become inputs into the operating system.
Sometimes the greatest thing a parent can provide is stability.
Not more information.
Not more coaching.
Stability.
Coaches Need To Understand This Too
I believe this is one of the biggest missed opportunities in coaching.
Most coaches coach what they can see.
Strikeouts.
Errors.
Walks.
Velocity.
Execution.
Body language.
Results.
Then the instruction becomes:
“Throw strikes.”
“Compete.”
“Focus.”
“Slow down.”
“Relax.”
“Have confidence.”
“Forget about it.”
Those phrases are not necessarily wrong.
But they often describe the desired result without teaching the athlete how to get there.
Telling an athlete to focus is not attention training.
Telling somebody to relax is not nervous-system regulation.
Telling somebody to have confidence is not confidence development.
Telling somebody to forget the last play is not teaching them how to reset.
You are describing the result you want.
You are not necessarily developing the operating system required to produce it.
We have to teach the mechanism.
Stop Coaching Only The Result
This is where I think baseball gets backwards sometimes.
We obsess over results and underinvest in the conditions creating them.
A pitcher walks three hitters.
We can all see the result.
But what happened before it?
Did his tempo change?
Did his breathing change?
Did his attention move to the runner?
Did frustration increase?
Did he suddenly begin thinking mechanically?
Could the catcher see it?
Could the coach see it?
Could we have interrupted the pattern earlier?
The same thing applies to hitters.
The strikeout might not be the real problem.
What happened leading into it?
What was the decision quality?
What was the attention?
What was the self-talk?
What changed in the routine?
Instead of only asking:
Did you get a hit?
Ask:
Did you make a good decision?
Were you on time?
Were you committed?
What did you notice?
Where was your attention?
What happened after strike one?
How did your body feel?
What was your self-talk?
Did your routine change?
What did you learn?
What will you repeat?
What will you adjust?
Now we are developing the player.
Now we are helping the athlete understand their operating system.
We are not simply grading the result.
At The Professional Level, Fractions Of A Second Matter
This is where the conversation becomes incredibly interesting at the professional level.
I am currently working with a professional baseball organization.
I am intentionally leaving the organization unnamed.
Part of that work involves looking at minor league player development and asking a very specific question:
How do we optimize every fraction of a second?
One area we are examining is first-step reaction time in the outfield.
Think about how small those margins become.
The first read.
The first movement.
The direction of that movement.
How quickly the athlete recognizes information.
How quickly a decision happens.
How efficiently the athlete acts on that decision.
Professional organizations already have incredible amounts of information available.
Tracking technology.
Video.
Movement analysis.
Physical testing.
Performance data.
Development systems.
Tools designed to evaluate what a player does and help coaches improve it.
And I am looking at that information and asking another question:
What else is influencing the player’s ability to execute?
What is happening inside the operating system before the physical movement ever occurs?
Because we can measure the first step.
We can measure speed.
We can measure route efficiency.
We can measure positioning.
We can measure physical capacity.
We can measure the result.
But what happened before the first step?
Was the player actually fully attentive before contact?
How quickly did the brain identify the information that mattered?
Was the athlete mentally fatigued?
How recovered was he?
Was his attention divided?
What was his level of activation?
What happened during the previous 24 hours?
What happened during the previous week?
What does his normal baseline look like?
What has his operating system been processing all day?
That is what interests me.
Professional baseball will spend enormous amounts of time, money and energy trying to find another tenth of a second.
Another hundredth.
Another fraction.
And it should.
Those fractions matter.
But some of the opportunity to improve that fraction might begin hours before the athlete ever puts on a uniform.
Sleep.
Recovery.
Screen exposure.
Mental fatigue.
Stress.
Routine.
Preparation.
Attention.
Emotional state.
Decision load.
These are not necessarily separate from performance.
They are inputs into the operating system producing performance.
The goal is not replacing the technology that already exists.
The goal is adding context to it.
Take the information organizations already collect and connect it back to the person producing it.
Because if we are trying to optimize every fraction of a second on the field, we should probably understand what is happening during the other 23 hours of the player’s day.
The first step happens in the outfield.
But part of what determines that first step may have started long before the baseball was hit.
The World Has Changed
We cannot train athletes exactly the same way we did 20 years ago because the environment around the athlete has changed.
The amount of information competing for their attention has exploded.
Phones are designed to get attention.
Notifications are designed to get attention.
Social media is designed to keep attention.
There is endless comparison.
Statistics are immediate.
Video is immediate.
Feedback is immediate.
Messages are immediate.
Opinions are immediate.
Recruiting information is immediate.
Everything is always available.
Every one of those things becomes another input.
Another decision.
Another emotional response.
Another opportunity for attention to move somewhere else.
The nervous system rarely gets a break.
The operating system rarely gets a break.
Then we wonder why athletes struggle with attention.
Attention needs to be trained intentionally.
Recovery needs to be protected intentionally.
Awareness needs to be developed intentionally.
Emotional intelligence needs to be developed intentionally.
You cannot simply tell an athlete to have better EQ.
You have to help them understand the system.
This Is Not Soft
Understanding your nervous system is not soft.
Working on emotional intelligence is not soft.
Talking about attention is not soft.
Learning how your operating system responds under pressure is not soft.
It may actually be one of the most difficult forms of training because you cannot hide behind physical talent.
You have to look at yourself.
Your routines.
Your behavior.
Your habits.
Your decisions.
Your distractions.
Your reactions.
Your preparation.
Your recovery.
Your excuses.
Your attention.
You have to recognize the input.
Understand the response.
And determine whether that response is helping you.
Then you have to decide what you are going to do about it.
That can be uncomfortable.
That is development.
What TransferEQ And EQOS Are Trying To Build
Ultimately, I do not want athletes who need me forever.
That is not the goal.
I want athletes who understand themselves.
I want athletes who understand their own emotional intelligence operating system.
I want a 12-year-old who can recognize what frustration feels like before frustration owns the next inning.
I want a 15-year-old who understands that staying on his phone until one in the morning may affect much more than whether he feels tired tomorrow.
I want an 18-year-old who understands how pressure changes decision-making.
I want a college player who can recognize the difference between physical fatigue and mental overload.
I want a professional athlete who can identify a change in activation before it affects execution.
I want parents who understand when their athlete needs support instead of another coaching point.
I want coaches who understand that the nervous system underneath performance deserves the same attention we give mechanics.
That is the bigger goal.
That is why I call it EQOS.
Emotional Intelligence Operating System.
Your operating system is always running.
The goal is to understand it.
Then develop it.
Physical Development + Psychological Development + Emotional Intelligence + Behavioral Data
That is where I believe player development is going.
Not replacing physical coaching.
Adding another layer to it.
Physical development.
Psychological development.
Emotional intelligence.
Behavioral information.
Performance data.
Connected together.
Because the strongest swing in the world does not help enough if the athlete consistently makes poor decisions.
Ninety-five miles per hour does not help enough if a pitcher cannot regulate under pressure.
Great hands do not matter if attention disappears when they are needed.
Talent gives you capacity.
But your ability to consistently access that capacity is something different.
To me, that is where emotional intelligence becomes performance intelligence.
Can I understand what is happening inside me?
Can I recognize what is happening around me?
Can I separate useful information from noise?
Can I regulate my response?
Can I place my attention where it needs to go?
Can I make the next good decision?
And can I do that when the environment becomes harder?
That is what I am trying to understand.
That is what TransferEQ is trying to measure.
That is what EQOS is trying to develop.
And that is what we are trying to transfer onto the field.

Every swing involves a decision.
Every reaction involves a decision.
Every reset involves a decision.
Preparation involves decisions.
Recovery involves decisions.
Where you place your attention is a decision.
And all of those decisions are being influenced by your nervous system.
By stress.
By recovery.
By your environment.
By your habits.
By your emotional state.
By your awareness.
And by the operating system connecting all of those things together.
That is EQOS.
That is emotional intelligence operating in real time.
That is emotional intelligence transferred into performance.
That is performance intelligence.
That is TransferEQ.
Attention Is The Sixth Tool
If you are a player, parent, coach, academy, college program or professional organization and this sounds like a layer of development you have been missing, I want to talk to you.
Whether the athlete is 10 years old or playing professional baseball, the starting point is remarkably similar.
Understand what is happening.
Understand the operating system.
Measure what matters.
Build awareness.
Develop regulation.
Improve decisions.

Because we spend thousands and thousands of hours developing the athlete’s body.
I believe it is time we spend more time developing the system controlling it.
Train the player.
Understand the operating system.
Measure the person.
Protect the attention.
Develop the EQ.
Transfer the skill.
Attention is the sixth tool.
